What Does the VA Cover?

The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides certain burial benefits to honor veterans' service, helping to alleviate some costs associated with burial and memorial services. However, these benefits don’t cover all expenses, so it’s essential to understand what’s included and what may still require out-of-pocket costs.

Covered by VA

  • Burial in VA Cemetery: The VA will cover the cost of burial at a national VA cemetery, which includes the plot, grave opening, and closing, as well as ongoing maintenance.

  • Headstone: The VA provides a free headstone or grave marker for veterans who are buried in a VA national cemetery or certain private cemeteries.

  • Burial Flag: The VA provides a flag to be draped over the casket or grave as a tribute to the veteran's service.

Not Covered by VA

  • Full funeral costs: include expenses for the casket, funeral home services, burial or cremation, transportation, and other related arrangements.

  • Private cemetery fees: cover the cost of purchasing a burial plot, grave opening and closing, headstone installation, and ongoing maintenance, which vary by location and cemetery.

  • Funeral home services: include preparing the body, arranging ceremonies, providing transportation, and assisting with necessary paperwork and permits.
